/Want to come back to something @glennkirschner2 has been writing and talking about for months - the crimes committed in 2016 were different, and require sustained Congressional attention. What happens when a President cheats his way to the White House?
/As @glennkirschner2 has pointed out our system cannot look the other way if a huge, successful effort to break US election laws took place. Failure to examine, failure to prosecute, failure to respond creates an incentive for others to do so in the future.
/Russia probe has to be seen in this context, as part of a grand conspiracy by Trump to cheat in 2016. This thread goes thru it- NRA, Foundation, Russia, illegal hush money.
/And what has changed in recent days is that idea there is no remedy to electoral cheating has been challenged by two separate actions in North Carolina. First, a panel invalidated a federal election due to cheating. fivethirtyeight.com/features/north…
/And a judge in North Carolina invalidated actions by the legislature because the majority they used was determined to be ill-gotten, gained thru cheating. washingtonpost.com/politics/judge…
/Conclusion - that there is evidence now Trump cheated to win the Presidency raises issues beyond his removal. How should a democracy handle cheating, or foreign intervention? Can the election, or the Presidency itself be seen as legitimate? Congress must examine, debate.
