I worked in network radio. Here are some of my criticisms: Too young sounding, too energetic, too fast, too squeaky, too singsongy, not singsongy enough, not young sounding enough, not high energy enough.
My favorite was that I don't sound like I'm taking the news seriously. Also women were like 10 percent of my coworkers anywhere I worked except public radio.
Also don't get me started about the way I was treated by the worst offenders - like a fuckable bit of fluff. Didn't stop them from stealing credit for all my work though! Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
Not to say I didn't have a great time for the most part. Radio and podcasting is so fun.
But there are definite liabilities. The pay; the pay gap; the constant criticism and having to fend off gross people; the hours can be brutal; and weird dudes mail you panties.
That was when I was at CNN, where security goes through all your mail since people are in the habit of mailing incendiary letters and devices and have been for some time, so I'd get some slit-open envelope full of women's thongs and I'd be like "y'all know I didn't ask for these"
