thinking about this: if homosexuality had been widely popular and accepted in the 30s, would the social phenomenon of the businessman slapping his secretary on the ass and saying "hey toots, get this man a coffee, wouldja" still have happened
obviously this was a product of misogyny; but the reason those men had female secretaries was because those mens misogyny, and societys in general, made that the most convenient way to feel locally powerful all day for those men
basically i wonder, if homosexuality had been widely accepted in the 20th century, who would have filled the lower tier in the power hierarchy in order to enable that kind of crass sexualization of office politics
this is mostly a moot exercise because if homosexuality had been widespread and public I fully believe that would be a butterfly effect that would have utterly rewritten the fabric of society, but it's too late to know that now
i will say this though: if you wrote a comic book that portrayed this scenario, people would call it sexualized, special-interest "gay literature" and it would not be stocked anywhere near books showing the same thing but with the traditional gender roles
no straight man would be able to look at it and not feel like it was smut
