Until data rights are the new civil rights, privacy will be the new luxury. It takes work, time, and money to protect yourself. And even then there are no assurances. It’s just a varying degrees of prophylactic effect. Meanwhile, deceptive data collection practices thrive.
No one knows who owns AdBlock, the world’s second most popular adblocker. Most industry observers in the know assume it was covertly purchased by Eyeo GmbH, who owns AdBlockPlus. They won’t confirm or deny.
I use @betterblocker on my iOS and macOS Safari browsers because I know and trust the people who built it. @aral and @laurakalbag are the last people on earth to racketeer your data to Google and adtech.
I use @ProtonVPN which is very costly. It’s probably a luxury VPN. But realize you are paying for both a robust technical feature set and a legal jurisdiction that grants you data rights. It’s the Swiss bank account of VPNs. Most other VPNs are a scam. slate.com/technology/201…
