Cambridge Analytica was illegal. It was illegal in part because it was British. The UK Data Protection Act of 1998 not only prohibited its practices but also extended its protections to foreign subjects processed in the UK. This includes some 200 million US voters in 2014-2016.
Going to London to finish what I started. No confidence in the proposed winding-up of Cambridge Analytica. People like you support me in this risky effort because you know that we have proved we have outstanding data rights in the UK. It doesn’t matter that I’m an American.

To block YouTube on iOS devices linked by Family iCloud accounts:
⚙️Settings > Screen Time > (child) > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content > Add Website to Never Allow
In addition, the YouTube app (and possibly YouTube Kids) should also be deleted as necessary because the website block in iOS only limits the browser. You can also apply a limit to the app in Screen Time controls.

It's that application time of year again and my inbox is flooded with emails from prospective students asking for advice about how to apply. To benefit everyone who didn't have the courage (which we know can be raced, classed, and gendered) to hit send, here's what I have to say:
First off, everyone worries about GRE scores. Don't. In many departments, they're used for a minimum threshold and that minimum is lower than you think. Literally everything else in your application matters more than your GRE score.
Next, letters of rec. It's tempting to choose the most prestigious person who will write you a letter (i.e., the university president), but it's better to get one from whoever knows you best and can speak to your academic work.
