#Venezuela
Just after dawn on the Friday morning, a Venezuelan National Guard convoy (GNB) passed through the village of Kumarakapay heading south towards Santa Elena de Uairén.
The Pemones attempted to stop the convoy at a checkpoint they have set up in the village of Kumarakapay. The convoy which included a number of buses carrying GNB soldiers passed through but the Pemones stopped some of the vehicles further behind in the convoy
The busses carrying the GNB soldiers stopped and walked back up the road towards where the Pemones has gathered, what follows below is the video of the confrontation that resulted in heavy gunfire from the GNB that killed a civilian and left dozens more injured
When the GNB soldiers reached the Pemones position a confrontation occurred which resulted in the GNB shooting multiple Pemones
After this confrontation the GNB soldiers went back to their vehicles and continued into Santa Elena de Uairén but the Pemones managed to stop some vehicles from passing their checkpoint and detained a number of soldiers and vehicles
General José Miguel Montoya, the commander of the GNB in Bolivar state was at the scene. Some reports suggested he was detained but he was there to mediate the situation and talk to the Pemones and the local mayor.
General José Miguel Montoya then appeared in this video on the 23rd February alongside a local leader of the Pemones in Gran Sabana where the local denounces the action of the military and Maduro for ordering the attack against the Indigenous population.
General José Miguel Montoya is seen here with other members of the GNB who were negotiating with the Pemones on the 22nd February
On Monday the 25th February, Jose Miguel Montoya was removed as the commander of the GNB in Bolivar state by Vladimir Padrino (Venezuelan Defence Minister) and was replaced by Alirio José Cruz Ortega. It is unclear what has happened to José Miguel Montoya
The 2 Pemones killed by the GNB in Gran Sabana were Zoraida Rodriguez who was killed instantly after being hit by a stray bullet on the morning of 22nd February and Rolando Garcia who died in hospital of his injuries in Boa Vista yesterday morning. They were husband and wife.
