Joining the mob to trash celebrities is fun so we tell ourselves it’s “punching up” and ignore that becoming a celebrity requires turning oneself into a product to be reliably consumed by the mob in the first place, a process that is simultaneously divinizing and dehumanizing.
The answer to the idolatry of celebrity is to treat them like human beings, neither slaves nor gods.
