You can have a church that attracts Latinos and be a white planter. You can also be a Latino church planter and not attract Latinos who understand and appreciate their cultural values. Here are a few reasons why: 1
If you don't value family you might not attract Latinos (who are in touch with their culture). Latinos place a strong emphasis on family as the major source of one’s identity & protection against the hardships of life. 2
So TALKING about family from the pulpit but not ACTING like your folks are family in the day to day interactions with people, will have Latinos like me saying "these folks aren't the real deal."3
Also Latinos place a high value on demonstrating respecto in interactions with others. Having a culture where respect is not shown even to the people with no titles will make some Latinos rethink their association with your church plant or helping as a volunteer. 4
Gringos tend to be time & task-oriented, Latinos tend to be more focused on relationship. We are about simpatia “kindness” meaning politeness and pleasantness EVEN IN STRESS. I have worked with leaders who turn into monsters under stress. Yeah, we ain't about that life.5
Latinos are about family & FOOD. We love the importance of "The Table" & showcase our culture and love of food around hospitality. YES, we want you to come over. YES, we want you to invite us out to eat. Important connections happen over food & we want our churches to get that. 6
