I walked into @ImpactHubBrum this morning, there was three people & a bike mechanic fixing bikes outside, numerous meetings happening every corner I turned, coffee shop full of laughter, an artist residency starting in one corner, children in the Creche, someone fixing ..
... & cleaning a Saxaphone. Some people heads down working a way, a local councillor walked in, the distant laughter of children, a large cities think tank from London in one of the meeting rooms. This is what I’d always dreamed of it being & now this is just an average day ...
... & so much bigger stuff is happening. It might have been hard, people might have laughed at what we were trying, we’ve never quite been enough for big funders, generated loads of our own revenue & not waited for grants to move, but never quite enough of anything ..
... but I sit back and feel proud we’ve got to this. Blessed.
From where I’m sitting I can see a data SME, a real estate company, photographer & filmmaker, writer, an IT consultant, a designer, a small DV charity, a councillor, an education social enterprise, a VCS staff member, multiple artists, many of them parents with their children ..
... upstairs, I can see people with their heads down in the quiet space, laughter, chatter, meetings, children. In a time of division, we coming together everyday & believing in something better. It’s not gamechanging, but it matters.
You can’t tell whose paying, whose worktrading, who’s exchanging skills, nobody minds, everyone gives everything they can whether that’s finances, skills or time to keep things running.
We are closing at the end of the year, as Digbeth rents & landlords aren’t the type of place these communities can thrive, be affordable, open & free to access. But, before we do close, come and join us and spend time here, use the resources and make the most of it.
