On #InternationalWomensDay we celebrate all the Zimbabwean women who have, throughout our history, created music and broken barriers! Image
In the 70s, one of the biggest artistes in the country was Susan Mapfumo. Very forceful singer whose songs were unapologetically feminist.

“Handitambwe iyoyo...”

#InternationalWomensDay
Susan Mapfumo is one of a few Zim women to lead a band. And she did that in the 70s. Always, she never pulled punches in her lyrics.

“Munondivengera zvandakarima ndega, hamunyare..”
Shout out to Busi Ncube, Chiwoniso Maraire... #InternationalWomensDay
Shout out to Virginia Sillah, who was lead singer of the Harare Mambos. She passed away in 2017.
What a voice she had 🙌🏽 #InternationalWomensDay ImageImage
In the 1970s, two young nuns, Gertrude Matsika and Tendai Maminimini, defied church convention and a patriarchal society, and took up guitars and recorded music.

Picture it.. Nuns. With guitars. In the 70s ✊🏾 #InternationalWomensDay ImageImage
Before she was “Mai Rwizi”, Susan Chenjerai was singer in a famous duet with Safirio ImageImage
Zai Regondo...

The time Daisy Chenjerai, “Mai Rwizi’s” daughter, sang about raising a child all on her own only for the father to reappear.

#InternationalWomensDay
So there was Susan ‘Mai Rwizi’ Chenjerai.

She had daughters. There was Daisy, who sang ‘Zai regondo’. There was also Jane, who sang this famous tune ‘Usandimirire pagedhi’ 😊
