📲 🧑 Google is moving to three gender options for emojis in 2019: for improved consistency, and inclusivity blog.emojipedia.org/googles-three-… 
For all existing code points that do not specify gender, Google will give these a gender-inclusive appearance in 2019. Hopes to add more sequences, too.
Google Emoji Boss @jenniferdaniel: “Gender is not a haircut but at emoji size that seems to be a primary signifier to communicate what may be an impossible task as it relates to this construct.”
At present, many emojis appear as a woman on one system and a man on another. If all platforms used a gender inclusive design for these existing code points, that inconsistency would be removed. Image via unicode.org/L2/L2019/19078…

📜 Historical note: Google once had 'blobs' for many people, which had genders but no skin tones. Other platforms (iOS, Windows, Samsung, Twitter, Facebook) had more realistic humans at the time. Google switched to human designs in 2016, after Unicode introduced skin tone support
Google's early era blobs only displayed gender where the Unicode Standard called for it (👧 Girl, 👦 Boy, 👩 Woman, 👨 Man, etc) and left the designs ambiguous for others (🏄 Surfer, 💃 Dancer, 👮 Police Officer).
📲 This year, emojis which don't specify gender will return to a gender-inclusive design on Google platforms. Newer gendered sequences will remain supported as an option for cross-platform compatibility, as will skin tone support. Coming to Android Q in 2019.
