THREAD - The duplicity and two-facedness of @JeremyCorbyn and @UKLabour when it comes to antisemitism. (Cartoon credit: @MortenMorland)
On Monday night, the usual motley crew of left-wing activists met in London at an event entitled - "Stop the attacks: Defend Corbyn, Defend the Left". Many of those who spoke are old personal friends of @JeremyCorbyn and have spoken alongside him on numerous occasions.
One of the speakers was Lindsey German, @JeremyCorbyn's old Stop the War Coalition comrade. German began her speech by reading out a message of support from @JeremyCorbyn. Watch below:
The message is significant because it essentially represents backing and support for the meeting from Corbyn. It is also likely that the message was sent directly to German from either Jeremy himself or someone within his office. So let’s take a look what German goes on to say...
German begins by pitting antisemitism against Islamophobia and by labelling antisemitism allegations against @UKLabour as “attacks”. She goes on to say that "it tries to say that the biggest problem we have in this country is antisemitism and that is simply not true"...
She then goes on to allege that @JeremyCorbyn was never accused of antisemitism before he became leader of @UKLabour. This is untrue, just ask the @JewishChron (thejc.com/news/uk-news/j…) or @CST_UK (cst.org.uk/news/blog/2012…)....
At a later point in her speech, German decides to attack the political record of Jewish Labour MP, @MargaretHodge (presumably for having the gall to call out antisemitism). She says that Hodge is part of a "wrecking operation".
German makes clear that she is not a @UKLabour party member because she believes that she can "help Jeremy better from outside the Labour Party than within it". She also believes that she would have faced disciplinary action if she had been a party member....
This is a particularly significant point considering the message that German received from Corbyn. Are @JeremyCorbyn and @UKLabour enlisting the support of people external to the party structure (who would otherwise be kicked out) to fight against antisemitism allegations?
German goes on to state that @UKLabour have nothing to apologise for and that "there is nothing for Chris Williamson to apologise for"....
This is the meeting that @JeremyCorbyn supported. A meeting where general antisemitism across the UK is downplayed, where Jewish Labour MPs are attacked and where the whole problem of antisemitism in @UKLabour is reduced to little more than a political attack...
@JeremyCorbyn and @UKLabour may publicly indicate that they take antisemitism seriously, however no political leader who took the issue of antisemitism seriously would have given that message of support.
