ROLLING THREAD: Here is what lawmakers are saying about the possibility of Trump pardoning Manafort. Our reporters are hustling on Capitol Hill.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) says: "Congress would erupt if the President tries to use his pardon power to let Manafort off. And it will be viewed as evidence of a very guilty conscience. That's the way it will be viewed. The President should be very wary of that." (via @mkraju)
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) says: "...that’s a decision that’s in the President’s hands. I would hope he would consider the impact on confidence the average American has on the rule of law." (via @AnnieGrayerCNN)
Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) says: "...this President should not even begin to think about pardoning any of these individuals and such a pardon, or even inklings of a pardon would be I think a gross abuse of power and Congress would have to act." (via @AnnieGrayerCNN)
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said: "It's too soon... pardoning Manafort would be a, would be seen as a political disaster for the President. There may come a day down the road, after the politics have changed that you’d want to consider an application of him like everybody else."
Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) said it “probably would” be a bad idea to pardon Manafort. (via @AnnieGrayerCNN)
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) says: “This may shock you, but I don’t have a comment on that I haven’t really thought about it." (via @AnnieGrayerCNN)
Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) says: "You gotta pay the price for the things you do."
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) sidesteps the question, saying: "That hasn’t even been brought up. If it ever comes to fruition, you can ask me the question then but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.” (via @mkraju)
House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) says: “Pardons done for improper motives could be impeachable offenses but you would have to know the improper motives.” (via @mkraju)
