Next up is Weidan Li — introducing symbolic interaction. A social lens to explore user experience.

#DR19
When Weidan came to Australia he went to the local swimming pool and experienced people swimming professionally while his experience in Northern China had been completely different.

The pool is defined by the social context of its use.

A story about social context:

You want to buy and apple but you can't afford it
@RealHughJackman walks by and says he can buy it for you
You love him so much you ask for his signature

But now you don't want to eat the apple—its social context has changed
For banker training they had originally thought there were issues with the content of online learning modules but found that the social context of working with mentors changed their relationship to the learning tools.
The context of money is also social.

Weidan wanted to explore the concept of money rather than the behaviour of using banks which was the original brief.
Weidan has innovated the framework to understand symbolic interaction.
What Weidan found was saving money did not have any symbolic context, rather it was a habit that was developed from a young age.
Money has become a social ritual, WeChat lucky money creates and sustains a social bond.

Context: To show care and love, Chinese families would put money in a red envelope and pass to their loved ones. (Please let me know if there's more context to this)
Another insight Weidan found was that Chinese Millennials (this study was focussed solely on this group) had full trust in their older family members about what they should do with their money.

Decisions are made collectively no matter how individual the purchase.
Social stories are like invisible liquid.
Symbolic Interaction suggests a design research framework.
Takeaways:

Explore human context, ask question about people around the user.
Your social stories are going to be inspiring and used for innovation.

The human social context is fairly solid and slow to change
You can use social context to make products more enjoyable to engage with.
Symbolic interaction is a MINDSET instead of a model.
