Like so many others around the world, I woke sick at heart this morning. The murder of dozens of people in Christchurch as they sat at prayer....this was an ISIS tactic, employed by a self-described hater of Muslims.
The white-right ideology espoused by the terrorist leader responsible for these murders is easily dismissed intellectually. However, we Americans and Western countries generally have little choice but to take it more seriously than we have as a threat to lives & public safety.
Sikhs here in Wisconsin a few years ago. Jews in Pittsburgh last year. Muslims in Christchurch yesterday. Tomorrow it could be a multi-racial Christian congregation somewhere. In the racially and religiously diverse societies we live in now, nearly anyone could be a target.
After 9/11 America and most other countries took extensive measures to defeat Islamist terrorism. Some of them were excessive in retrospect, but overall they represented a logical response to a real threat. A similar response to white-right ideology is required now.
The pain felt by Muslim citizens of New Zealand must be especially acute at this moment. What they are suffering today, we must spare no effort to prevent others from suffering tomorrow.
Law enforcement here in America and in other countries has experience in preventing terrorism. The murderous attack in Christchurch yesterday is the signal to step up efforts to suppress terrorism from this new source. [end]
