During the 2008 housing crisis, I traveled to NV to hear the stories of those who'd lost their homes. I was part of the panel that oversaw how the Treasury Department was spending the bank bailout money, and I wanted to make sure we heard from the people being hit the hardest.
I still think about these gut-wrenching stories because it’s a powerful reminder of what housing means in our country. That's why it's so important for government to get housing policy right.
Government at all levels hasn’t done enough to tackle our housing problems. The federal government has reduced investments in housing for middle-class and lower-income families even as rents have gone up.
The gap between white homeownership rates and Black homeownership rates is 30%—more than it was when housing discrimination was legal in 1960.
Government regulators looked the other way before the 2008 crisis as predatory financial institutions targeted minority communities and sucked billions of dollars in wealth out of them.
Let's be clear: We’re not going to solve our housing crisis by nibbling at the edges. We need to tackle it head on—with big, comprehensive solutions that match the size of the problems we have. That’s what my housing plan for America does.
