So on a day when MPs are warned not to travel home alone because of threats to their safety, one v small story I wanted to share. 1/
Last week I was at a unit for kids excluded from school, interviewing kids sick of being described as violent/feral/beyond the pale etc. One girl had just found out she'd been offered work experience in an MP's office. 2/
It was a huge deal for her & not just for CV purposes (employers not always rushing to hire from pupil referral unit). It was a vote of confidence, a sign she was worth something. She never thought she'd be allowed somewhere like parliament. 3/
It was moving to see & i nearly included it in the piece but, word count. Something always gets left out. But MPs' days are full of stuff like this; never big enough to report, potentially capable of changing lives. 4/
Getting people rehoused, challenging immigration decisions, sorting benefit stuff & a million tiny things like this. Parliament isn't just the people who make you furious. & even the fury-inducers often do stuff you don't know about.
which is just one reason this whole 'parliament v the people' thing is so mad; so much of the time that divide is artificial. Anyway. Normal sarcastic service will now be resumed.
