We've been told all of our lives that socialist Bulgaria was supposedly so bad and evil, but now capitalist Bulgaria is the fastest-shrinking country in the world, with growing poverty and rampant inequality, the poorest and most corrupt state in the EU

Cold War anti-communist propaganda always obscured the fact that, before the communist revolution at the end of WWII, Bulgaria's monarchy was allied with the Nazis and Fascists.

Now capitalist Bulgaria again has a right-wing government in coalition with a far-right racist party.

A 2009 Pew study found that 62% of Bulgarians said life is worse under capitalism than it had been under socialism. Only 13% agreed that life had been worse under communism.

And poverty and inequality have only gotten worse in the decade since this poll.
