This seems like a solid point. If Mueller thought obstruction too close a call after two years, for Barr to settle it in two days doesn’t exactly suggest he gave the question serious consideration.
Barr seems to lean very heavily on “if Mueller couldn’t prove THIS underlying crime, there couldn’t be any corrupt motive to obstruct.” But that’s clearly wrong. Trump would surely prefer Cohen not be jailed for campaign finance violations, or Manafort for FARA violations.
I strongly suspect we’re going to learn a lot more in coming weeks/months, but even assuming what’s already public is all there is, Trump has abundant reason to wish this inquiry had withered after he fired Comey.
