Canada's Chrystia Freeland said she conveyed to US Trade Rep Bob Lighthizer today that Canadians are very "troubled" about the idea of ratifying the new NAFTA while US steel and aluminum tariffs remain in place. As usual, Canada is not quite declaring no-ratification-unless.
Freeland noted that Trump previously suggested he was using tariffs as negotiation leverage. She said that's an invalid reason for "national security" tariffs, but regardless, "now that the trade negotiation is completed, there can be no further justification for those tariffs”
The issue is that Trump's rationale has shifted. He did indeed initially suggest these tariffs were just negotiating leverage, but now he says he's a "tariff man" and that these are good tariffs.
