It is very typical for separation of powers reasons that elections must be overseen by the people---not government. This needed a LOT more policy discussion!

In 2002 GA legislature did a massive power grab to concentrate power in one official and strip the local citizens'/boards' oversight of elections. Both parties seem okay with this--although other states can't understand why.

Read/hear @JohnnyIK @NPR report on voting bill, now law. Look at nonsense, dishonest claim by @GaSecofState that there is "100% confidence that result was right!!" But there is ZERO confidence. These lies will not stand.

2/GA officials claim that machines will "eliminate questions about voter intent." There is NO basis to believe this at all. Touchscreen input error rates higher than hand marking paper ballots. GA officials---stop LYING to voters!
3/ Raffensperger claims that education will "win people over," but just the opposite is true. Education will cause people to reject this technology as the unauditable junk that it is!

Thanks @rickhasen for exposing this issue for debate. @philipbstark & @rad_atl & @OSET, please weigh in here. What is missing is the understanding that the BMD (sometimes barcoded) ballot is not a reliable source record for auditing. BMD proponents are missing that point.
Thanks to @rickhasen blog, I saw this Tweet response from Becker that he blocks me from seeing. The bill does indeed require audits---audits that CANNOT be performed according to auditing experts (and common sense.) The ballot cannot be verified by the voter = unauditable.

@RVAwonk @ybbkaren The Root article stretched too far imo. But we shld have been scrutinizing all along-& shld scrutinize now—the many red flags re: our voting machines & tabulators (eg remote access software, cellular modems, an SOS who turned off machine audit functions) to protect us in 2018! 1/

By the way, many officials mislead by calling these COMPUTER marked paper records with bar codes “voter verifiable” bc they also include text. Call them on it! The only part of the paper record-which some call a “paper ballot”—actually counted as ur vote is the barcode! 3/

Electronic ballot markers by ES&S—recently outed for selling systems w/ REMOTE ACCESS software—are spreading like cockroaches! They produce COMPUTER marked “paper ballots” w/ text & BARCODES. The only part of the ballot actually counted is the barcode, which humans can’t read! 1/
