@senatorjen @RepScottHolcomb @dufort_jeanne 1/ I would have hoped that the change would have awaited a specific legal challenge against a BOE. It is very typical for separation of powers reasons that elections must be overseen by the people---not government. This needed a LOT more policy discussion!
@senatorjen @RepScottHolcomb @dufort_jeanne 2/ GA has already consolidated power to conduct elections in a more concentrated way than any state in the 50. Nor do I know a democratic nation that has the one-man/ gov't. official control of elections that GA does. It is THE key reason that...
@senatorjen @RepScottHolcomb @dufort_jeanne 3/ GA's elections are so out of control. In 2002 GA legislature did a massive power grab to concentrate power in one official and strip the local citizens'/boards' oversight of elections. Both parties seem okay with this--although other states can't understand why.
@senatorjen @RepScottHolcomb @dufort_jeanne 4/ What remnants of local control were left were further grabbed by the SOS in HB316 making him in charge of ALL programming for ALL systems. It was just astounding to me that no lawmaker in either party even mentioned it in any hearing or debate. It's wildly undemocratic policy!
@senatorjen @RepScottHolcomb @dufort_jeanne 5/ I keep trying to understand the GA culture in that regard. I don't know of another state where that would pass muster. Neither party would allow it. One man programs everything behind closed doors on unauditable machines with no oversight. 🤔
