Cool science lesson here. A few days ago, I marveled at the change in afternoon temperatures at Miami Intl Airport. Today, I literally gasped at the change at Miami Beach (image attached here, several more images to come, I'll re-bundle them at the end of this thread) 1/n
To state the obvious, it's nuts. Half the late summer afternoon temperatures of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s literally don't happen in late summer any more. They're extinct. Half of Miami Beach's late summer afternoons have gone extinct. And that's not the science lesson. 2/n
Miami Beach's mornings are warming as well, but not as dramatically from one distribution to the next. So, Miami Beach, like Miami, is warming more consistently (and more, overall) in the afternoon than in the morning. What's up here? It's the sea breeze. 3/n
The sea breeze is that prevailing, onshore, afternoon wind that sets up when [even small] land masses get a lot warmer than the ocean. Meteorology students get pummeled with them learning about density-driven "solenoidal flows" but, Dear God, that's not important right now. 4/n
Anyway, check out the afternoons about 40 miles inland (and about 20 miles from shore) at the west end of Tamiami Trail. Still warming, but not as much. 5/n
Tamiami (inland) afternoons aren't warming as much because the sea breeze isn't absolutely dominant there. At Miami Beach, the sea breeze is an every day kinda thing. The ocean temperature regulates the afternoon temperature - and strongly. 6/n
And that ocean is warming, and the Miami Beach afternoon temperatures, which conform tightly to those ocean conditions are being pulled upward. Pretty interesting stuff. Slides attached here, with Tamiami mornings thrown in for completeness. 7/8
If you read this far, you're interested in the world around you. Here's a secret: the world around you is interested in you. Make it proud. You matter. /fin
Addendum/coda: A good friend just wrote to me to let me know Miami Beach has a relatively sordid stationarity history. So that's a grain of salt. Area beach-proximate stations do show pronounced Tmax change in recent decades.
