Not sure if that is a good strategy either, for most European countries it is going to be a simple choice given that they are in EU and relying in every possible way on good collaboration. To single Germany out doesn't really work, also given the strong ties with France.
It is more likely that USA is going to force EU more on integration in defence and security. What is often forgotten is, that GER has the capacity to easily challenge e.g. UK but not yet the will to spend so much money. This could change soon.

It's also striking that a lot of commenters ignore German overproportional contributions to development assistance & foreign aid which aims to stabilise regions politically and economically - it prevents conflicts (if it is well done).

Whether you are a "superpower" is more reliant on your economic capabilities than plain hard power of military capacities. I had a exchange few days ago on that issue, and it seems to me that some people ignore economic & political capacities.
Whether you are a pole of power depends on several factors, therefore I don't see that China and USA will be the only poles on the world stage. EU could end up as another pole due to it's diplomatic, geopolitical and especially economic capacities of its core members (FRA & GER).
