Here's my response, in the thread below my column today, to those who say there's no point in taking action to defend the living planet, because it's all too late. I see this claim as a pathetic, self-serving attempt to avoid moral agency. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
One less than thrilling aspect: despite a concerted effort by a PR company working pro bono with us on #NaturalClimateSolutions, NOT A SINGLE BROADCAST MEDIA OUTLET was prepared to cover this amazing topic, or even to mention our campaign. They are living in a world of their own.
I have tried again and again over the years to persuade the broadcast media to do its job and cover our existential crises - and the potential solutions. But I feel I'm beating my head against a wall. Despite their current claims to be taking these issues seriously.

In either case, isn't it extraordinary that the BBC making a film about #climatebreakdown is billed as a Big Event? In the midst of a climate emergency, films about the subject should be common and regular. But years go by in silence.
We have been starved of information about our existential crisis. And it's not for want of people desperate to make such films. Many of us have tried over and again, only to be rejected out of hand. It makes you wonder what the hell has been going on.

Between these 2 clips, 1m people have watched this argument that ending #climatebreakdown means overthrowing capitalism. Will current affairs programmes now allow us to hear such things? Or will they remain confined to comedy shows?

The BBC and other broadcasters have systematically excluded such perspectives from both current affairs programmes and documentaries. In any other country we would know what to call it. Censorship.
The broadcasters tell us they seek balance. But they seek balance only within a remarkably narrow spectrum of thought. Any views that challenge the system as a whole are excluded. And not passively. In my experience, they are rejected with a string of angry expletives.

On @frankieboyle's New World Order last night, I argued that preventing #climatebreakdown means overthrowing capitalism. I don't think there's any other BBC programme that would allow this.
The only way in which you are now permitted to speak truth to power, by the BBC or any other major broadcaster, is to disguise it as comedy.
As TV comedy and drama have become ever more daring, factual and current affairs programmes have become ever more timid. Truth now has to be smuggled under the guise of entertainment. This is how TV works in authoritarian regimes - and in the UK.

The IPCC report on holding global warming to 1.5°C released Sunday calls for it. A share of the Nobel in Economics was awarded to William Nordhaus this week for championing it. It's arguably the most efficient and powerful climate policy available.

Today, Trump simply continued the US’s 40 year campaign of terrorizing the Iranian people for overthrowing a US-backed dictator. Since 1979, the US has been teaching Iranians a lesson about what happens if you disobey the US & Iranians have been paying w/ their lives. #IranDeal
In truth, the US torment of Iranians started in 1953, w/ the US/UK supported coup against Iran's democracy & imposed the brutal Shah regime. The CIA worked w/ the Shah to track down dissidents & turn them over to be tortured.
When students stormed the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, they found an unbelievable amount of counterfeit Iranian currency, which the US was going to use to flood the Iranian economy & destroy it.

On this day in 2015, the US & Saudi Arabia began their criminal war in Yemen, which has killed 12,000 civilians (including 2,500 children) through systematic bombing of civilian areas, bringing millions to the brink of famine & generating a massive cholera epidemic.
The war—which uses US-supplied weapons—has included countless war crimes like the bombing of hundreds of markets, schools, food stores, hospitals, mosques, farm fields & civilian homes. The UN has called Yemen the world’s “worst humanitarian crisis” & it’s made possible by the US
The US could end the war tomorrow by stopping the midair refueling of Saudi jets, which Saudi Arabia doesn’t have to capability to do on its own. Jets burn up fuel quickly & need midair refuels to reach Yemen.
