I'll watch the BBC's climate film tonight with interest. I just hope it's better than the last one. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
In either case, isn't it extraordinary that the BBC making a film about #climatebreakdown is billed as a Big Event? In the midst of a climate emergency, films about the subject should be common and regular. But years go by in silence.
We have been starved of information about our existential crisis. And it's not for want of people desperate to make such films. Many of us have tried over and again, only to be rejected out of hand. It makes you wonder what the hell has been going on.
But a good move by the BBC is showing @frannyarmstrong's Age of Stupid on BBC4 at 10 this evening

This is great news, and big congrats to @MarkAvery, @RuthTingay and @ChrisGPackham. But I'm still puzzled by some aspects. For example, why would anyone seek a licence to kill rooks? theguardian.com/environment/20…
As to objections that crows eat ground-nesting birds
1. Licences can still be obtained
2. The scarcity of ground-nesters and the high population of crows point to ecosystems wildly out of balance. This is a great opportunity for new, systemic thinking, instead of constant killing
Meanwhile, 35 million pheasants are released into the UK countryside every year, without an environmental impact assessment, laying waste to wildlife and encouraging gamkeepers to kill any animal they perceive as a predator - legally or otherwise.

We might ask ourselves why @elleprovocateur and others feel moved to spread baseless rumours about a 16 year-old girl, and why so many adults want to repeat them. It is not a good look.

Its purpose is to portray the interests of billionaires as the interests of the common people, to wage war against trade unions and beat down attempts to regulate business and tax the very rich. Now the people who helped run this machine are shaping the government.

(2/6) Nobody denies that data quality deteriorates as one goes back in time. Nonetheless, serious economic historians (with Angus Maddison at the top of the list) have been able to assemble credible estimates of GDP back to 1820. And it is not just cash income as Hickel claims.
(3/6) Bourguignon and Morrisson (AER 2002) combined Maddison's GDP estimates with historical data on distribution to estimate both poverty and inequality measures back to 1820. The data are hardly ideal, but it is credible evidence of much higher global poverty rates in C19th.
