Quick Dwayne Haskins thread coming, off of 6 tapes viewed. Was surprised at the OL getting worked vs higher level talent (i.e. MSU), the WR inconsistencies at times, and the amount of penalties. Was a unit that found ways to win ugly.
(+) Quick Game
Distributes on time with +placement the majority of throws. Mastered not only most talked about Mesh, but Shallow Cross, and Space ( Hank) concepts (gets to 2nd read Curl w/ease). Quick release driven by left foot getting down quickly, & anticipation
(+) Command at LOS
Displays clear ability to change protections against a wide range of defenses. High level FBI in wake of motions and ID coverages in drop, including most safety rotations. Comfortably can find the answer to defenses problems pre and post snap
(+)Decisive
Both in traditional coverage or progression read to post-snap RPO (liked wide zone tagged w/dbl slants vs Indiana), possesses very good play speed. Can see eyes through feet on most front-side reads. Project he can get to back side reads consistently w/more experience
(+) Placement to Intermediate Level
Shows ability to throw away from zone defenders to routes that terminate in space (Sit in Hank), to runner’s ball in Wheel Routes to rhythm fades. Eye discipline (manipulate MOF S) can put WRs in +position for RAC,
(+) Willingness to Send It
Understood when to send vs 1 v 1 setting up DPIs or giving WRs a chance to make play. Deep placement needs improvement but many misses were on the “correct side”. Believe next level will lead to better play at catch point, leading to “wow” throws
(+) Grit
Ability to stick w/offense during tough stretches (MD, MSU) despite lot of penalties and mistakes. Ability to make aggressive defenses pay with his legs (MD LBs fast flowed everything to spill) both in and out of structure. Bigger the stage the better the play
Improvements (lot of change through season)
1) 2nd reaction Hole Shots
2) Touch on intermediate routes (layered when necessary)
3) Spatial awareness in pocket
4) Shuffle in pocket, see upfield shoulder as radar now
(-) Field Vision Post-Snap
Did not identify blitzes from depth (Dean Pees would salivate) at high level, particularly from wide angles.
Tunnel vision at times under pressure
On deep routes tendency to read only defender target moves away from
(-) Deep Ball Placement
Flashed ability but not nearly consistent enough
Partially due to uprightness in motion, as well as left plant foot straightening or locking out at release. Worst cases on deep throws were almost like a “reverse C” as a golfer
(-) vs Pressure
Pocket movement poor, often squares shoulders to LOS (no shuffle/slide)
Often startled by color in periphery, eye discipline solid but very raw in this area
Not efficient vs ID’d blitzers, wont come off spot, mental clock needs honing
Will leave pocket prematurely
(-) vs Pressure (cont’d
Willingness to throw off platform a double edged sword, led to stretches of scattershot throws (and un-clean footwork even w/no pressure)
Too many jump throws relying on arm strength
(-) Caution on Select Deep Throws
Over wary of Zone Eyes within structure(i.e MD Post-Wheel Mesh vs field rotation, does not send Post, vs OSU Hippo vs C3 wont throw skinny)
Project that this improves w/experience, even at next level
Overall, although raw the improvement in 1 season is impressive. He can hang his hat Day 1 in Quick Game and build from there. Believe his growth curve shows a potential year 1 starter, and immense upside as a thrower distributing to all levels, who does what is needed to win
