Good evening from Sioux City, Iowa, where people have begun to file into the Olsen Student Cwnter at Morningside College. “Good Times” by Chic is being played through the speakers.
And now they’ve started playing The Who’s “Baba O’Reilly”, a sure sign that the program is beginning here at Morningside College in Sioux City, IA.
Folks, when I’m right I’m right. Beto O’Rourke, sporting a Morningside Mustangs baseball cap, takes the stage to John Lennon’s “Power to the People.”
W/ a shoutout to Iowa's status as an early caucus state, Beto O'Rourke dings the state's wage gap in Sioux City, saying "Though you are first in so many things, you are 35th in the country with regards to the disparity between what men are paid and what women are paid."
Taking a q in Sioux City on how he'd fight attacks from Donald Trump, Beto O'Rourke hits the administration for its rhetoric on immigration: "I might expect someone to describe someone as an infestation in the Third Reich, I would not expect it in the United States of America."
A supporter asked Beto O'Rourke how to defend from charges he's light on specifics. O'Rourke answers, "On any given issue that you raise, I will do my best to answer it with as much detail I can, if I’m lacking I will learn from you.”
Well, I've seen it all. In Sioux City, IA, a girl asks Beto O'Rourke if he'll go to prom with her. O'Rourke says “First of all, as someone who did not go to prom because no one asked me, this means more than you know," before making his counter-offer: "Will you caucus for me?"
I tracked down the young woman who just asked Beto to prom and asked how she felt about his answer. “Kinda sad,” she tells me. Asked what she thought about his counter offer to caucus for him, she tells me she lives in South Dakota.
But she got him to sign her sign! She might not have a prom date, but Claire from South told Beto O’Rourke it was “the happiest day of her life.”
*South Dakota oops
After his remarks in Sioux City, Iowa, I asked Beto O'Rourke about charges he lacks specifics on the stump. O'Rourke told me, "I’m absolutely learning from the voters that I'm talking to," adding, "Yeah, I have a lot to learn and that's why I'm here. I'm listening, I'm learning."
Here in Iowa, the AP's @ajjaffe asked Beto O'Rourke about his comparing the Trump admin to the Third Reich, and whether that's "elevating the rhetoric in the campaign." O'Rourke told her, "If we don't call out racism...then we're going to continue to get its consequences."
Anyway if you ever find yourself in Sioux City, Iowa, I recommend Tacos el Guero and their wet burrito with steak and chorizo. Good night!
