Still lots of head scratching over this Ministry of Education memo to school boards outlining how many teaching positions are estimated to be gone through attrition over the next 4 years.

This was the source of the 10,125 job loss number that was initially reported yesterday.

You can easily see why the error was made. Many of us simply added all the columns to come up with the final figure.

Premier's Office quickly phone up reporters last night telling us the 10,125 figure was wrong.

BUT the savings figure of $851-million was correct.

We were told you have to add up all the numbers in the 2nd and 3rd rows (which estimate the savings) but NOT to add up the numbers in the 1st row (which talk about the jobs)

HUH?

Logically, if you add row 2 and 3.... you would also add up row 1. That would give you 10,125 jobs lost thru attrition, with a savings of $851-million.

However we have been told, repeatedly, that it's actually 3,475 positions eliminated.

Education minister said this in a statement about the number.

Either way.. it's likely why many of us QP media types suffer from headaches that only coffee can cure.
