And now, another piece of short fiction: "Through This House," which takes place chronologically between LATE ECLIPSES and ONE SALT SEA. This is the story of Toby trying to reopen Goldengreen, which is not entirely on-board for having a new regent.
This was actually the first piece of Toby-related short fiction I wrote. A MONSTER WAS UNLEASHED! But it was a lot of fun, and Toby exploiting May's literal immortality remains one of my favorite things.
This is a light, pleasant story that still includes and establishes some very important things. Watch the pixies!
"Through This House" was originally published in HOME IMPROVEMENT: UNDEAD EDITION, edited by @ToniLPKelner and @RealCharlaine. It is still in print!

"Never Shines the Sun" was originally packaged only with the print edition of CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, in an attempt to provide additional value to the physical books. It was accidentally included in the ebook release.
This story plays a scene we had already partially seen, between Amy and the Luidaeg, in its entirety. A six-year-old October meets the sea witch for the very first time.
Because this story was only in one edition, it was written to be as non-load-bearing as possible. Its events happened, but they aren't essential to understanding any of the characters involved.

Back to the long, slow October Daye thread! If you're using this to determine reading order, after ONE SALT SEA, you'll enjoy ASHES OF HONOR, wherein Toby has a series of very bad days.
Toby has and is intentionally written as having clinical depression. She never calls it that, because Faerie needs good therapists, but she is not in a good place during this book. She's suffered some of her worst losses to date. She's broken.
She gets better! ASHES OF HONOR introduces us to Chelsea, who is also having a bad day, and finally puts Li Qin on screen. Jan's wife is a joy and a delight, and I could write her forever.

And then we reached book five, ONE SALT SEA, wherein I decided to answer the question "just how disgustingly self-indulgent can I be in a single book?" It's all about MERMAIDS. Punchy, punchy mermaids, and the punchiest mermaid of all is Dianda Lorden.
Toby rides a screaming, furious mermaid in a wheelchair down a hill into the San Francisco Bay. That scene alone marks this as my most self-indulgent book, period.
(Also, the dedication is an almost direct quote from an MTV mockumentary about boy bands. I have a brand, and that brand is WEIRD AS FUCK.)

First Conservative amendment proposed seems to be at the behest of the Vancouver Aquarium, to deal with motherless whales that are found and may be rescued. Liberals vote against and it is defeated.
Second Conservative amendment is Marineland's amendment, re what happens when currently pregnant belugas give birth. They want an explicit exemption to protect their beluga farm.

O.k., this is happening ... now. I'm going to explain what's actually going on when data is encrypted, hopefully without mystifying, oh and some of the weird and inconsistent stuff cryptographers come up with.

O.k. so symmetric encryption - that's what we most commonly use when we want to encrypt gobs of data, large and small. Your browser sends and receives your data with symmetric encryption. If your files or disk are encrypted ... that's symmetric encryption.
iMessage, Signal, WhatsApp - they all use symmetric encryption to actually encrypt your messages. So at it's most basic, when you think of encryption as take chunks of data and "scrambling" them so that nobody who doesn't have a key can understand them, that's this.
