"Never Shines the Sun" was originally packaged only with the print edition of CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, in an attempt to provide additional value to the physical books. It was accidentally included in the ebook release.
This story plays a scene we had already partially seen, between Amy and the Luidaeg, in its entirety. A six-year-old October meets the sea witch for the very first time.
Because this story was only in one edition, it was written to be as non-load-bearing as possible. Its events happened, but they aren't essential to understanding any of the characters involved.

Looking to get your hands on MIDDLEGAME a little early? Head out to THIRD PLACE BOOKS (@ThirdPlaceBooks) in Lake Forest Park, WA, on Saturday, May 4th, at 6pm.
This particular bookstore has an excellent bakery and a resident blue frog named Cobie. Highly recommended. Plus legit early-release copies of MIDDLEGAME! I don't know yet whether this is a ticketed event.
Looking to get your hands on MIDDLEGAME a little less early, but still within a technically "early" slice of time? I'll be at the Cedar Crossing Powell's on Monday, May 6th. I do not believe this is a ticketed event.

As we continue the long, slow crawl through October Daye, I give you CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, aka, "Toby has a really lousy day, and hates politics more than she ever thought possible." I knew this book was coming from the beginning, but it was still a shock to the status quo.
The biggest change from conception to execution: originally, Arden was going to be hanging out in the local SCA community, not selling books at @borderlands_sf. I asked permission before including the bookstore, and before including the bookstore cat, Ripley, who had passed away.
In Toby's world, Ripley is going to live as close to forever as the series can encompass, because fiction gives our dearest ones a soft place to rest.

Back to the long, slow October Daye thread! If you're using this to determine reading order, after ONE SALT SEA, you'll enjoy ASHES OF HONOR, wherein Toby has a series of very bad days.
Toby has and is intentionally written as having clinical depression. She never calls it that, because Faerie needs good therapists, but she is not in a good place during this book. She's suffered some of her worst losses to date. She's broken.
She gets better! ASHES OF HONOR introduces us to Chelsea, who is also having a bad day, and finally puts Li Qin on screen. Jan's wife is a joy and a delight, and I could write her forever.

I have cited AO3's taxonomy and archiving systems as models at academic linguistics conferences because they are IMPRESSIVE as usable, durable, well-designed systems, and frankly academia could stand to learn from fandom here
Here's an example: rights transfer and orphaning

Academic archives are patchy when the original depositor of the data dies or doesn't want to be responsible for it anymore. AO3 has a whole system in place to transfer fic to another user or leave it up without your name attached
I was literally at a conference a few years ago when an academic was like "oh yeah we just don't know how to deal with rights transfer at our archive" and I pulled up AO3's orphaning policy as a model

1/ I’m very passionate about #books. Every opportunity I get I try to buy some more books for my #antilibrary. However, over the last year, I have changed how I read books. I’d like to share the short story and process in the following thread:
2/ Story: I felt like I was stagnating. I read a lot but I didn’t think I read well. I’d forget almost all of what I read besides a few key points in a fairly short period of time. Being in fields that require consistent learning, I felt I needed to change my approach.

Never underestimate the motives and means to really mess up someone's life and their dreams. #digitalidentity
Also, don't underestimate the value of your #digitalidentity. It is worth much more than a bank account balance or a fraudulent credit card charges.
Those types of financial damages can be remedied. But your future, your dreams, your self-esteem, your confidence can't be easily restored, no matter the assurance provided.
