You’re right: it’s *not* called “the struggle for nothing”. Because who wants to struggle for nothing? That would be the definition of futility. It’s called “the struggle”. Where you place your quotation marks makes a world of difference.
There you go, @RJohnDickinson: typo corrected. (And I inserted the missing space between “it’s” and “*not*” in the first line.). Thank you for pointing out that my pedantic, nitpicking tweet was riddled with typos and proof-reading errors.
And don’t get me started on people who leave out the ‘comma of address’. I read this and thought, “Why is this erstwhile UKIPer declaring love for David Lammy? Had to re-read to realise that she was haranguing him, not expressing love for him. LEARN TO PUNCTUATE PROPERLY ffs.

To those arguing that “referendums” & “referenda” are both acceptable plurals but mean different things
a) NO
b) stop defending the indefensible
c) the correct English for a public vote simultaneously addressing several issues is “a multi-proposition referendum”, not “referenda”.
Pleased to see that my autocorrect does not offer the abomination that is “referenda”. I’ve trained my iPhone well.

I know Mercer isn’t calling for an actual military coup or think it could happen. But to note that, historically, when armies seize power they don’t think they’re driven by powerlust; they think they’re defending core values against corrupt or ineffectual democratic institutions.

Although he isn’t calling for an actual military coup here, Mercer is contributing (others have done their part) to creating a political environment where respect for & patience with parliamentary democracy is so weak that in a few years idea of ditching it might be mainstream.

Rep Jeff Flake of Arizona & Paul Hodes of New Hampshire requested release of the evidence. However, under the circumstances of this case and the risk of prejudice to any pending criminal investigation, among other concerns, the Board was unable to grant their request.

Maybe we should listen to the wisdom of those who have had their country torn apart by sectarianism. Here’s what @crookedshore says are the steps to demonizing the other:
1. Assumption of Malign Intent:

what we know now as /pol/ actually used to be /new/. /new/ came around in 2010 and was supposed to be for news discussion. it eventually got deleted and relaunched as /pol/.

why did it get deleted? funny you should ask:
4chan - which had been around since 2003 - had been developing this problem for quite awhile, because one of the core thing of 4chan is the lack of moderation and rules. there *are* rules, but which rules there aren't, and which ones don't get enforced, makes a culture.
