If students only get one-bite at your subject, I think it's best to design the course around inducing them to want to come back for more on their own time and initiative. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
I've heard profs say things like, "this may be the only time they have to read Shakespeare," which is admitting defeat beforehand and making one's goals too narrow. Bigger Q. is how to get students so they want to read more after class is over. (Shakespeare or otherwise)
I've been guilty of underestimating student curiosity and seeing content as necessary medicine, rather than focusing on the course as an introduction and invitation to the field in the hopes they'll want to drink deeper in the future.

Re: Academic blogging, it helps not to think of it as a means to a larger end. While blogging has opened up some opportunities for me, the greatest benefit has been to my own teaching and writing practices. It's a tool to help me figure out what I think & believe.
Also extracting and emphasizing this from @deandad. The internet exists as an attention economy, but writing to draw attention exhausts its fuel very quickly and always winds up in a dead end. Every writer is a "unique intelligence." Write from that unique intelligence.

Most depressing part of this piece is that it assumes high school should just be a mindless slog toward college acceptance after which students can live for a semester before the slog continues in college. nytimes.com/2019/04/04/wel…
One of the moments of epiphany in my teaching was when a college sophomore openly longed for retirement so she could finally start to pursue the things she wanted to do with her life. Wrote about it in Why They Can't Write.
The solution to "senioritis" isn't to encourage students to suddenly start living once they've secured college acceptance. We can obviate senioritis by giving students freedom and agency throughout their schooling.

This morning I've finished Scott Kellys (@StationCDRKelly) Book "Endurance" ( bit.ly/endurance-scot… ). Some thoughts below.
First, thank you Scott for sharing your story along with many personal insights from your time in space. It's great to learn more about the long path to become an astronaut and all the immense effort behind the human space program.
While reading Scotts book I got to understand the scale of the challenges coming with living and working in space better. It starts with having no gravity assisting you with daily life, keeping yourself healthy and alert for the hostile environment you are living in.

Space Force is a bad idea. Outer space is the only realm where we were able to create international laws before any nation had a real stronghold over territory. The space laws that exist emphasize cooperation and scientific exploration, not war. Fund NASA instead.

There isn’t much space law, which is a good thing! Space is a relatively new frontier for international law. We do not have to regard the “territory” of space in the same way as we have historically dealt with land and sea. We can do better.
