On Monday in the SSC annual exams being held under the Matric Board Karachi, a controversial question 4rm the question paper of Islamic Studies contained (MCQs) asked the students to make a choice that the worst animal before Allah is: donkey, pig, infidels, or monkey. 
But the students were perplexed in making a perfect choice. Because the examiner who had developed the question papers was of the view that the absolute answer of the question was infidels, a person who has no religion or whose religion is not that of the majority.
He mentioned Surat Al-Anfal [verse 55], of which translation in the textbook of Islamic Studies by Sindh Text Book Board is “Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are those who have disbelieved, and they will not [ever] believe”.
He, however, was of the view that the said verse is telling “Certainly, the worst of beasts in Allah's sight are those who do not believe and they will not believe”. He stressed that the meaning of “Sharrudawab” meaning, is the worst kind of beast. Thus this question was asked.
He further said that those candidates who have chosen the answer ‘Pig’ will be unable to get one mark and those who made the choice that infidels are the worst animal before Allah will receive one mark because the last ones are correct.
My question was why you don’t teach and ask questions as per syllabus? He challenged me for a Manazira* that I declined. Even though he admitted the fault and vowed that he will review the question paper next year.
He, however, didn’t answer the question: “Are such controversial questions and lessons causing extremism among students?” Perhaps all the concerned authorities don’t have an appropriate answer to the question above.
