One last @googlecloud keynote livetweeting thread before I call it a conference. #GoogleNext19

Gather round, folks. The theme of this one is "Developers."
Oh, it started already. The Youtube stream was stuck on loading. Who owns that piece of--wait. #GoogleNext19
Alex Seligman: "This keynote is all about that excited feeling you get when you make something new," rivaled only by the incredible feeling you get when you turn something beloved off on people using it. #GoogleNext19
And @tekgrrl takes the stage to talk about spending time on toil. This resonates. #GoogleNext19
"What about when management says to ove to a different cloud?" "That's definitely not the fun part!"

That is a massive understatement. #GoogleNext19
Normally @kelseyhightower plays Tetris in keynotes, so I'm wondering if today he'll play Mario Cloud Run instead.

#GoogleNext19
Demo using Jenkins and IntelliJ.

Were this an AWS keynote they'd then demonstrate their replacements for both of these things as the vendors sat stunned in their expensive expo hall sponsor booths. #GoogleNext19
Demonstrating Google Cloud Code, an IDE integration.

You can steal a march on @awscloud by supporting vim. Do it do it do it.
#GoogleNext19
I notice that the Google engineer on stage pronounces "GitHub" with a hard G.

I'll allow it.
#GoogleNext19
I really like StackDriver. It's a great service and very well named. It's very much magic... #GoogleNext19
Oof, the failed service in the scripted demo is "Redis." They can't catch a break...

#GoogleNext19
And now @adamse returns to the stage! Did you know I had a podcast called "Screaming in the Cloud?"

Did you know he was a guest?

screaminginthecloud.com/episodes/episo…

Apparently Google didn't, and he's been immediately taken back offstage.
#GoogleNext19
How much does the "Announce your own product on the #GoogleNext19 Keynote Stage" sponsorship cost?
Wow. The default Jenkins window just got more cheers than most of the other announcements in this keynote.

I'm not sure what to make of that.

#GoogleNext19
The demo gods are spiteful, but the recovery was well done.
At least we know the demos are real!

#GoogleNext19
"The best part is no Kubernetes" was just said on stage.

YES.

#GoogleNext19
"Any tips for managers of dev teams?"

"Know your team. My mantra for a happy team would be simple solutions for complex problems."

The Kubernetes team bundles the speaker off-stage and into a van. She will never be heard from again. #GoogleNext19
This isn't a criticism, but GCP's released a handful of things at #GoogleNext19. It feels like they're padding out the rest with demos and customer stories.

The velocity of releases is very different than what I'm used to with other providers...
"Now let's talk about data!"

This is now a KeyValuenote. #GoogleNext19
Cloud Comedy tip: "Tabs vs. Spaces" jokes (and similar) are played out in most contexts; large audiences are super risky. If it doesn't work the entire bit falls flat.

#GoogleNext19
The cultural dissonance between this keynote and the theme of the entire rest of the conference is jarring. I think the entire audience doesn't know how to react as a result. #GoogleNext19
And now talking about Cloud Run.

So this is like AWS Lambda crossed with AWS Fargate. Super slow cold-starts.

Calling it "Serverless" is a bit of a red herring though--it's treating the event-driven paradigm as simply "runs arbitrary code." #GoogleNext19
Also works on-prem with your Kubernetes cluster.

I've never quite understood the point of Kubernetes. "You pay a cloud provider, so you can run this software that forces you to become a cloud provider too." #GoogleNext19
Eric Schmidt takes the stage NO NOT THAT ONE he's a developer advocate. #GoogleNext19
They're talking about sports analysis, but my sporting efforts are limited to fitness entire burrito in my mouth so this isn't really my thing. #GoogleNext19
Talking about migrating data from S3 to Google's equivalent. AWS casts a very long shadow. #GoogleNext19
"I'm sure by now Steph Curry is running Anthos on his mobile phone."

Nah, Steph Curry's a winner, and thus recognizes that "Cloud" is more than "can move VMs around."

#GoogleNext19.
And @adamse returns to close out what felt like a very all-over-the-place keynote with a call to the crowd to talk to Google DevRel folks about what they're seeing--and that's probably the best call to action imagineable from this "New Google." #GoogleNext19
