It’s no coincidence with the rise of social media and more attention being paid to the news that it’s becoming readily apparent our society is riddled with deep inequalities and that the people in charge, the wealthiest and most powerful, are actually really, really inept.
They’ve always been this clueless and this impotent, it just so happens we now have consistent proof, particularly in a president who happens to be exceedingly wealthy and a complete and utter failure at everything he’s ever done.
For so long it’s been accepted that wealth and power meant competence and intelligence, but it’s readily apparent that nothing could be further from the truth. Watching the rich and powerful fail and embarrass themselves is just constant proof of inherent privilege.
The system we live in was designed to assist the rich and powerful. The framers did this intentionally. Those with wealth and influence benefited from an aristocratic order before and after the founding. It’s just more apparent now than ever.
There’s a chance this transparency can lead to reform or a change, but man alive, we have a lot of work to do, especially in disentangling our learned belief that wealth and power denote competence and worth.
