Maybe, and hear me out here, it’d be a decent strategy to embrace your constitutional duty by impeaching a historically unpopular president for historically unprecedented crimes. Maybe it wouldn’t be the worst thing to bring everything to light and make Republicans own this mess.
It’s not enough to say, sure, we have a criminal president and this list of crimes found by a Republican prosecutor, but Republicans are stooges so laws don’t matter. That kind of pragmatism erodes public and world faith and sets nightmarish precedents.
What good is it to tell Republicans that as long as they act in unbelievably bad faith you’ll never hold them accountable for even the worst crimes? You’re inviting them to act in even worse faith.
I’ll tell you how you prove you deserve to lead a country: a willingness to take on the hardest problems all at once. You can impeach a criminal president while outlining a better future for the country. Anything else is an abdication.
