most people arent trying to "figure things out" or deduce a logical conclusion, theyre trying to minimize their own mental discomfort. this sounds stupid but everything about talking to people changes when you fully realize this
you can argue and argue and argue with someone but you have to realize that the reason theyre arguing back is because theyre experiencing mental discomfort and want it to stop, youre not going to "convince" them. theyre seeking mental comfort, not a cohesive view of reality
i experience this all the time when im back where i grew up. for example if i bring up owning a rifle people will try and "debate" me about owning guns but really theyre just experiencing mental anguish and want it to go away, theres no actual exchange of information happening
i think a lot of guys get confused because they know what theyre saying is right and logical, but other seemingly sane people around them lose it when certain issues come up. well once you understand why you can see where art, rhetoric, and just avoiding this shit comes into play
