WRITERS OF THE INTERNET: I have a pilot on CBS called SURVEILLANCE. It’s a serialized spy thriller with a morally complex female lead. I want to read your samples. DMs are open. Get at me. #WGAStaffingBoost
Some backstory on SURVEILLANCE for my fellow travelers: I wrote this script on spec in 2014. I had some credits in nonfiction TV but I wasn’t repped, didn’t live in LA and had just a couple contacts.
A couple years earlier I was about to turn 30, sitting at home reading @johnaugust blog posts while working freelance transcribing interviews on a show about dogs & cats who see ghosts.
But anyway, something crazy happened and people just started emailing my script to each other. To their friends. To other execs. People I didn’t even know, people just saying “this is dope, check this out.”
From there things snowballed and eventually I was in a room in @mattreevesLA office with a couple of super smart hotshot producer bros (who aren’t on twitter) talking about the arc for the first season.
A couple years and about 100 drafts later and I was sitting in a room with @sophiabush talking about what it means to be an American.
Six months after that and we’re on set in Vancouver with a bonkers cast & the World’s Greatest Director (Patricia Riggen!) and I have CBS execs blowing up my phone loving the dailies while @allenleech and I sit around the bar googling standards-friendly synonyms for “jerking off”
The point here is to a) totally brag about my awesome show full of amazingly great people!
But also b) to emphasize how batshit crazy this all is and how insanely fucking lucky and privileged I am that any of this even happened and how much I cannot believe it happened at all and still can’t and won’t ever be able to believe it and holy shit how is this happening.
But all it took was someone to email my script to someone else saying “this is dope, check this out.” And before I knew it that snowball was rolling down the hill.
So if you got a script you love that you think people will dig, send it out. Send it to me. Sent it to anyone you can think of who may get a chance to read it. Kick that snowball down the hill. I promise you there’s no telling how big it will get and where it will go.
