The baseline for what level of integration between EU and UK you need to avoid physical infrastructure and associated checks on NI/Ire border is outlined by the Northern Irish specific provisions within the backstop. (Effectively customs union and single market for goods.)
This is really basic Brexit stuff. That British politicians still don't understand this is concerning.
What this means for GB's relationship with the EU remains up for discussion. You could still have a looser relationship between GB and the EU, but it would require deeper, supplementary provisions for NI.
