This is right. Clearly immigration mattered for Brexit. But not alone. See CPS by @carreras_miguel (local economies), @PStanig APSR (trade shocks), @fetzert on austerity, my forthcoming work with @davidrkadler (housing). Economy mattered.
And of course we lack good geographic data or certainly something plausibly exogenous that captures views about sovereignty. But @caprosser’s text analysis of open ended surveys shows that this was regularly offered as justification for vote.
I think it’s fair to say that some scholars have a point that immigration had been under discussed in scholarly literature in 2000s. But we should be careful not to do a complete volte face and claim it explains everything or even majority of this particular vote. Life’s complex
