Fantastic news in Boris Johnson's @Telegraph column. The rest of us will be on the beach at Pevensey, where the Normans actually landed.
Incidentally, I'll be giving a talk about the Norman Conquest in Pevensey on 28 September - the day the Normans landed there in 1066. Details to follow.
Also, I love the fact that Johnson commits this historical howler while simultaneously bleating about the importance of his own opinions.

So I just re-watched the classic Simpsons episode ‘Bart Gets An Elephant’. It is 25 years old, but a parable for our times. [thread]

Bart wins a radio station phone-in and is given a binary choice: $10,000 in cash or a full grown African elephant.

Bart chooses the elephant.
The radio people are shocked. No one was supposed to pick the elephant. There is no elephant.

So they try to negotiate (‘We think we know how your mind works, Bart’) and offer other alternatives which are equally stupid, but less costly and destructive.
These include paying the $10,000 dollars to Bart’s school principal, who agrees to pull his trousers down for a whole term, or using the money to surgically transform the principal into ‘some kind of lobster-like creature’.

You have to adjust for name recognition, though. Biden, at just south of 30 percent, is still something like a 2:1 underdog. And Bernie's position at 20 percent, as I wrote yesterday, is tenable but not great.
Per the chart above, Buttigieg's position is roughly as good as Bernie's on a "polls only" basis, or maybe a bit better. Empirically, you'd slightly prefer to be polling at ~10% with low name recognition than ~20% with high name recognition.

1) Not sufficiently emphasised in piece: UK failure to work out its own negotiating position until a YEAR after negotiations began was THE catastrophic mistake. EU tried its best to make sense of UK’s contradictory red lines because UK wouldn’t. 2/9
This wasn’t a thoughtless careless error; it was UK’s deliberate strategic choice to pretend engagement with Commission process, and then appeal over Barnier’s head to Merkel in the end game. A silly plan, stated (in public!) many times by Tories for all to hear. 3/9

#Actually, the chart actually shows clear evidence of the beer-wine frontier, with certain types of sprits (e.g. scotch, brandy/cognac) straddling the frontier. 🍺🍷
A few highbrow beers (although there's nothing *truly* highbrow on here) creep over into wineland, but that's sort of what you'd expect.

Boris Johnson is here at #PendulumSummit. He had a meet and greet with 'Diamond' ticketholders and has been kept away from media since. He's due speak about 'Opportunity in Uncertainty' about an hour.

Whose opportunity he's talking about remains to be seen.
