ISIS just claimed the Sri Lanka attacks as retaliation for the New Zealand mosque shootings. I predicted this would happen less than a month ago in my @washingtonpost piece about how jihadism and white supremacy are beginning to fuel each other's violence. washingtonpost.com/news/postevery…
As I wrote about the New Zealand shootings and violent jihadism, "this mutually reinforcing cycle suggests that more attacks from both sides will come, as each incident radicalizes a new cohort of believers." I take no joy in the fulfillment of this prediction, believe me.
It remains to be seen how violent white supremacists will react to the Sri Lanka attacks, considering they happened in a country outside of what we can call their realm of concern. If they take the bait, we can expect more retaliatory attacks and further escalation of this cycle.
Been off Twitter for a while. Correction: ISIS did not claim the Sri Lanka bombings in retaliation for the New Zealand shootings, although they did put out a statement in the aftermath of Christchurch calling for retaliation. Sri Lanka's defense minister said it was retaliation.
