Because so many people seem to be judging the idea of letting incarcerated folks vote based on the most extreme and unsympathetic examples, let's flip this on its head for a second. 1/

I know what you're thinking! Wow, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to judge a policy that would affect millions of people based on cherry-picked examples designed to reinforce a particular narrative about who the policy would actually affect. 11/

Finally watched this vid about prisoners who save dogs from kill shelters and prepare them for adoption. How different would the reception have been if the question to Sanders were framed around one of these inmates instead of a terrorist?

A lot to unpack in this Inquirer story about “deaths from kratom,” which is a phrase I’m sure a lot of people will take issue with www2.philly.com/philly/health/…
NMS Labs says it’s seen 303 deaths in which mitragynine was found in the first 6 months of 2018. That’s a big new number but doesn’t tell us a whole lot. Using FDA’s loose classification, all of those would presumably be “kratom-related."
As more medical examiners hear about the FDA’s concerns and these individual stories in the media, more of them will start requesting mitragynine test, which will lead to more positive screens.

Maria Butina’s bail hearing is getting under way. Feds recently released explosive new allegations against her in a bid to keep her jailed. huffingtonpost.com/entry/maria-bu…
Prosecutors have argued she’s a flight risk, citing among other factors, her alleged “ties to the Russian Intelligence Services” and other Russian billionaires. She also recently tried to move money out of the U.S. and appeared to be packing up her belongings, feds say.
They’ve also released more salacious details, alleging she was the live-in girlfriend of a well-known GOP operative who helped her secure meetings with high-level officials in conservative politics.

.@US_FDA gives update on its review of kratom. A few takeaways: Using a new computational model, the agency feels "confident in calling compounds found in kratom, opioids."
FDA is also updating its total count of kratom-associated deaths to 44, and has released reports regarding the 36 deaths it referenced in November. Here’s a link.

Trying to figure out what this means in terms of immediate FDA/DEA action on kratom. This conclusion sounds more tempered than previous ones, but likely won’t provide much comfort to the kratom community.

For some reason (I’m pretty sure I know the reason) many people seem to think if we oust Trump from office, everything can go back to being hunky-dory.
But the thing is, it wasn’t hunky-dory *before* him. It’s just that liberals didn’t care because things were going mostly fine for *them*.

The problem is that both parties abandoned regular people when Clinton won in 1992.

Let’s add a little context to the discussion of voting security in the US. To do that, I’m going to do something Computer Scientists are bad at - I’m going to talk about history. Specifically, let’s look at the Help America #Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. 1/
The reason to talk about HAVA is to start recognizing some of the challenges of paper ballot-based voting. HAVA came about largely because paper ballots were proving to be extremely difficult to manage. 2/
For instance, paper ballots are expensive (they’re not printed on standard college-rule paper), and they’re not reusable across elections. You’ve also got to try and guess who is going to show up to the poll, and how many ballots you’ll need in each language. 3/

Many Iranians criticised one of BBC Farsi’s journalists for her comments on Iran-Hezbullah relations. Some have even threatened her that she won’t be allowed to go back to Iran after the fall of the regime. Many Iranians believe some of @bbcpersian journalists support the regime.
In the past few days some anti-BBC slogans have been chanted by the protesters in Iran. In a comment one of BBCFarsi journalist claims that ‘Trump wants to turn Iran into another Syria by starting a civil war etc’. The same propaganda which is pumped out by Iranian state media.
Some of @BBCPersian journalists block anyone who criticises them. One of its journalists in particular has publicly supported A.Khamenei on his social media pages. I have written to a few MPs and the BBC about. Will see if BBC is interested in opening an investigation.

The first such group Kirillova discusses is RW ideologically religious. To that end, the Kremlin seeks to target activities & propaganda at Christian groups inclined to "protect Christianity." 2/8
Putin also targets less religious but still very far right groups in democracies abroad.

This ideology is frequently intertwined w/nationalist sentiments & the promise of a restoration of lost greatness. ('Make America Great Again' is the U.S. version of this rhetoric.) 3/8

Many people seem to be unhappy about Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub. The most common sentiment I see is a preference for GitHub to remain "neutral". But the status quo was not one of the available options. 1/
GitHub did not find a business model which could be sufficiently profitable to meet the expectations of their investors. IMHO, there was never a chance of that happening. 2/
A long-term independent GitHub became unlikely in July 2012 when they got a 100M investment. And three years later, after they got another 250M, their only possible destiny was acquisition. 3/
