So my dad is in hospital with complex problem. In a perennially top-ranked facility. Hes an MD. Im an MD, in systems mgmt 4 a huge bureaucracy.

I can’t navigate my dads care. Im struggling-& LIVID.

If i cant do this, no WAY anyone can

When im calmer, y’all getting a thread
OK, as promised, here’s the start of my THREAD, titled
(MIS)ADVENTURES OF AN MD SON OF AN MD.

Subtitled "TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS OF NAVIGATING THE US HEALTHCARE SYSTEM BY A GUY WHO SHOULD HAVE NO TROUBLES DOING THIS, BUT IS DROWNING BC THIS IS WACK."

so gather 'round, friends...
A few quick disclaimers:
Tweets are my own & don't represent views of @DeptVetAffairs , US government

I will not deliberately call out hospitals or bad actors. It won't be hard 2 figure out where this is going down but do it on your own.

There r MILLIONS of stories--here's mine
@DeptVetAffairs This is my dad, Said (Sa-YEED).
He's 83. He came to America in the '60s

He's a neurologist--that's a brain/ nerve Doctor.

Said is the best doctor on the planet.
@DeptVetAffairs I learned 2 critical things from dad about being a doctor:
1-Talking 2 patients & examining them well is SUPER important.

2.Doctors aren't scientists--they're ADVOCATES.

"YOU DO 2 THINGS HASAN! figure out what your patients need, & MAKE SURE THEY GET IT. Nothing else matters."
@DeptVetAffairs 4 years ago, my dad got prostate & bladder cancer.

The bladder cancer was cured, but prostate cancer was stage 4.

Stage 4 is the worst stage.
But prostate can be slow & is treatable 4 a few years.

(more about Prostate cancer HERE: cancer.org/cancer/prostat…)
@DeptVetAffairs The threads I will share w/U will be about the RIDICULOUS stuff I have had 2 navigate in my dad's care.

The theme:
MY DAD THE MD & ME, THE MD BUREAUCRAT, 2 ADVOCATES, WHO NAVIGATE THIS EVERY DAY 4 PATIENTS, can BARELY HANDLE THE CRAZINESS. & that means lay people R IN TROUBLE
@DeptVetAffairs I have, incredibly, DOZENS of tales of woe about difficulties navigating the bureaucracy of healthcare.

This thread is about the one that prompted my original tweet--the "straw that broke the camel's back."

Dad & I r ethnically Arab: here's your one stereotype image of a camel:
Side note about me & dad:

Dad served Veterans for 42 yrs in NJ VA hospital. He got Veterans what they needed.

I followed him, & now I work on quality & safety for our nation's VA hospitals. B4 that I worked in Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, & Baltimore. Getting ppl what they need
Back to this week's tale of woe:

Prostate cancer, when it spreads, spreads 2bone & breaks them. & the medicine 2 Prostate cancer makes bones soft and easier 2break

PSA: broken bones hurt. A lot. Especially when it's the backbone (spine).

& that's what happened 2 my dad.
Sorry dont know how i broke the thread. Im a twitter noob.
2 days ago, my dad got a VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION FRACTURE (VCF): a break in TWO of the 33 back bones.

Here is a normal scan and one of a broken vertebral body.
2things 2know:

1-when u break your spine, if u make the wrong move, u can be permanently paralyzed fr the waist down (or worse)

2-My dad is a brain/ spine/ nerve doc. He knows exactly what's happening. He knows he can be paralyzed forever-

He's in pain--worst EVER in 83y
