1) Satya Nadella has driven the best turnaround in technology history at $MSFT. IMHO, much more impressive than Gerstner/IBM. Interesting that Alan Mulally – a phenomenal automotive and aerospace exec who lacked sw experience - was the consensus choice for $MSFT CEO at the time.

2) Only someone with absolute confidence in their own technical knowledge and judgment could have made Satya's most important decisions – embracing open source, committing 100% to the cloud, Office on IOS, giving up on mobile OS, Windows 10 free upgrade, LNKD/Github acq’s.

3) All of these seem obvious now, but they were not at the time (i.e. closing down NOK almost immediately after an $7bish acquisition). Some were only symbolic, but important internal and external signals. Others were essential to the turnaround.

4) Cultural transformation around “growth mindset” seems real and impactful.
And Satya laid the foundation even before taking over as CEO by insisting that $MSFT infrastructure software teams develop for Bing, which was critical to the Azure stack being competitive with AWS.

5) Important to also recognize it’s not all about Satya. CFO Amy Hood is A+. The communication and disclosure around the business model transition have been phenomenal along with the overall cost management, internal resourcing and capital allocation.
