Big story from Bloomberg’s @jendeben: @USTradeRep Bob Lighthizer and other officials have been calling biologics industry and telling them they will have to accept weaker IP protections in China than they get at home in US or in Trump’s new NAFTA.
This is an issue that Democrats are objecting to in USMCA (Trump’s new NAFTA). It’s also one of the issues that held up congressional approval of the TPP.
But it also creates a terrible headline for Trump going into 2020. Everyone loves to hate the pharma industry. But negotiating a deal that gives it weaker protection in China than at home for some of its most innovative drugs doesn’t look much like America First.

I took an Uber ride back from the airport tonight with a young Afghan father of three who moved here three years ago after spending eight years working as a translator for the US military.

He works 60 hours a week driving for Uber and walked me through the economics of it...
He grosses roughly $2,100 a week if he does 60 hours. After fuel and other costs that comes down to $1,800. He also counts the depreciation in value of his car. And that brings it down to $1,600.

That’s before taxes, of course.
His short-term dream is to get his trucking license. He has friends who sometimes make $4,000/week driving trucks, he told me. But he thinks he can make $100,000/year driving trucks. And that includes health benefits and a 401k...

Navarro begins by making point that “economic security is national security” is the guiding principle of Trump administration.
He also invokes McKinley’s “Patriotism. Protection. And Prosperity” and the tariffs that followed from that as a great example.
Navarro declares that steel and aluminum tariffs have been huge success and have been repudiation of classical economists’ gloom and doom view that tariffs are bad.

Been thinking all day about the word “globalist” and my own use of it.

I am an Australian who has lived and worked all over the world. I believe travel and knowing people from different cultures is a vital part of life. I believe open cultures are stronger than closed ones. 1/
I am therefore comfortable calling myself a globalist. In fact I have walked into meetings at the Trump White House to talk trade and introduced myself as such, jokingly and as a recognition of my former employer. (The @FT is unashamedly for open economies.) 2/
I’ve always been conscious that globalist is a slur used by anti-semites. But I’ve always believed that appropriating slurs is also a powerful tool to counter bullies. And we should all do our bit to stand up to bullies. 3/

Over the past 20 years, China has made tremendous progress in improving its military capabilities, but its modernization program will remain a work in progress in the decade to come.
China trails the US in terms of nuclear attack submarines, aerial refueling & amphibious capacity. Beijing will continue to develop its capabilities on these fronts, but based on current projections, it will not reach parity with the US by 2030.

Conscious Western efforts to retard its growth & access to hi-tech supply chains, Beijing has adopted an overtly benign tone with its neighbors. These are, however, cosmetic tactical measures & China’s ambition of developing “a kind of military force system” has not changed.

Why would PRC force a unification as early as 2021? 1) 2021 is the centenary of the #CCP; anniversaries and dates have massive symbolic importance in China's political culture. 2) Xi wants unification to be part of his legacy. This is the only way that he can outshine #Mao.
