Later today, the Florida House will take up #SB7070 a bill to expand voucher programs. Those who support the bill will talk about the need to eliminate "waitlists" and how the vouchers over the past decade have helped to "expand opportunity." 1/6
It's worth examining that claim to see just how much opportunity expansion there actually has been.
In 2005, private school enrollment comprised 11.6% of total public and private school enrollment.
Since that time billions of dollars have been spent on vouchers. 2/6
Guess what?

In 2017-18, private school enrollment is still at 11.6% of total public and private school enrollment. 3/6
What has changed in the past decade is who pays for the 11.6% of students who attend private schools.

In 2005-06, fewer than 5% of private school students received a voucher.

By 2017-18, over 40% of private school students received a voucher. 4/6
Here you can clearly see that while the private school population has remained unchanged (11.6% of total Florida school enrollment), the number of students paid for with public $ has grown exponentially. 5/6
At this same time, funding for public schools plummeted.

Florida cannot afford to support both a public and private system of education.

It is well past time for legislators to #FundOurFutureFL 6/6
