IJP is disappointed, but not surprised by the treatment of @caster800m and other Black and Brown intersex athletes. We release this statement in support of her and other athletes:
On behalf of the Intersex Justice Project, we are saddened and outraged by the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which ruled that “DSD regulations are discriminatory but that, on the basis of the evidence submitted by the parties, such discrimination
is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics in the restricted events.”
We stand in solidarity with our South African siblings who are in the struggle to raise awareness of intersex people and people with variations in sexual characteristics (VSC).
By acknowledging that Caster has variations in sexual characteristics, we are not implying that Caster identifies as intersex, but her treatment as an intersex athlete has been unfair and biased.
Gender non-conformity and her Blackness are definitely factors in why she's being targeted. They would not be targeting a white gender-conforming athlete in the same manner.
Let’s be clear: the senseless and ruthless targeting of Black and Brown athletes with variations in sex characteristics is divisive, unfair, and xenophobic and undermines the competitive nature of sport.
The deliberate mishandling of Caster Semenya’s case, by disclosing her private medical information to the media, shows that the IAAF is equally racist, immoral and unethical.
This is not an appeal to the IAAF or the CAS to recognize our humanity as intersex people. Caster’s swag and unsurpassed merit has already proven that the Black intersex athletic body cannot be stopped. #intersex #CasterSemenya #southafrica #sports
