Saw Avengers Endgame again last night. It is still perfect and I still cried like a baby. However: What a difference an audience makes.
The first time we saw it was on the day of release. Everyone was 100% involved. You could hear the sobbing in the audience, people broke into applause at various points and at the end, every in-joke won big laughs.
Last night was, I guess, second-timers and people who were less fussed. Outbreaks of laughter, no applause, no big sense of communal involvement.
Made me realise what a privilege it was to see it on that first night, with a bunch of people who felt the same way as you. It was a proper moment of shared-cinema, where a great deal of the pleasure comes from the communal experience.
